We’re sure that you’ve been seeing various behind-the-scene Watch The Throne tour videos presented by VoyR scattered across the internet over the past couple of months or so, as they’ve followed the Jay & ‘Ye on their historic Watch The Throne tour. The series is actually more about ‘Ye than the duo, they just happen to be on tour together. VoyR states, “VoyR is an interactive entertainment experience to engage with our favorite artists, powering the WTT tour with Kanye West & Jay-Z.” Additionally, “VoyR will evolve ‘the fan’ from a spectator to an insider within the world of some of the greatest icons on the planet”. The entertainment platform has already been deemed “the next MTV” for giving fans unprecedented access. So rather than searching far and wide to catch the episodes, we’ve decided just to put them all here. Look no further, here are ALL the behind the scenes episodes thus far presented by VoyR (hopefully they’re in the correct order). Enjoy!

[Episode 1] “World Leaders”

In this episode, Yeezy offers a look backstage at the Madison Square Garden tour stop with appearances by Raekwon “The Chef”, Jay-Z, Angie Martinez and more while running a commentary about his pursuit for “awesomeness”.

[Episode 2] “The Chi”

In this second installment, VoyR focuses on their Chicago stop where Yeezy took Jay-Z to his neighborhood at the 77th Street/South Shore area in his hometown.

[Episode 3] “Permanent”

I’m sure fans of this site will be particularly fond of this episode. In this episode, VoyR takes viewers backstage during the WTT tour’s first show in our city of Atlanta with ‘Ye’s creative director Virgil Abloh.

[Episode 4] “Just Don”

AGS fans will also be particularly fond of this episode as VoyR takes us backstage in our city of Atlanta again, this time with Ye’s manager Don C who sports the SUPER heavy Chicago accent.

[Episode 5] “Just Kids From Chicago”

Episode 5 introduces some of Ye’s closest confidants, those who help him succeed daily. This installment gives us a pretty good glimpse of the often overlooked work that goes into a tour to bring us the product we see presented to us. This episode is narrated by Kanye’s creative director Virgil Abloh. YEEZY 2 ALERT!!!

[Episode 6] “Church”

In the sixth installment entitled “Church”, Big Sean speaks on his and Yeezy’s relationship along with appearances from Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen, Mannie Fresh, John, Legend, and Hit Boy. This episode is narrated by Ye himself.

Episode 7 follows Ye’s manager Don C. as he honors the lucky winner of tickets to the show.

In this episode, VoyR speaks of the successes attained from the tour & this VoyR Project. [Episode 9] “Journey To The Throne”

Here we follow five essay winners from Vegas to LA, as they embark on their concert experience and what it meant to them. The five winners were selected from a pool of 2,000 people, and were awarded the chance to tour with Kanye West. How dope is that?!

Inside Supreme: Anatomy of a Global Streetwear Cult — Part I

In a two part series, courtesy of our friends at 032c, BoF takes you inside notoriously press shy, New York-based streetwear brand Supreme. Today, in Part I, we examine how Supreme — the Chanel of downtown streetwear —became a global cult brand with its own myths, iconography and belief systems.

NEW YORK, United States — When the controversial young rapper Tyler, The Creator won the award for Best New Artist at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards in August, he offered an enthusiastic, yet expletive-laden acceptance speech. “Yo, I’m excited as fuck right now, yo,” he said. “I wanted this shit since I was nine. I’m about to cry.” But with MTV’s censors on high alert, the speech was broadcast more like this: “Yo, I’m excited as - -— -- -, yo. I wanted -- -- -- – —- --. - -— - --.”

With the audio missing for about a minute straight to avoid any profanities and Federal Communications Commission (FCC) fines, viewers were left with no choice but to absorb Tyler’s image in mute. Clad in skinny dark jeans, an oversize tie-dye T-shirt with an image of a cat’s face on it, and a Supreme baseball hat with a leopard print brim, Tyler, who is 20 years old, was the only artist at the award show who could be said to actually embody how young people dress today. No outfit made from meat, no fancy three-piece suit with a cocked fedora, no oversize bling: Tyler looked exactly how certain young men at this very moment choose to wear their clothes on the streets all over the globe.

It’s no coincidence that the only logo the image-conscious Tyler wished to communicate was the one on his Supreme hat. After all, Tyler’s hodgepodge street aesthetic – a big chunk of skateboard culture and urban hip-hop with a dose of American sportswear prep and a winking, intelligent take on hipster irony – is the one Supreme has been cultivating for the past 17 years since opening its first shop on Lafayette Street in 1994.

The flashy sartorial sensibilities of, say, Russell Brand or Kanye West have mutated into their own category of sub-entertainment and, more often than not, their personal styles do not reflect the current vogue. So how then did the Supreme aesthetic finally become one of the most honest representations of how men choose to wear their clothes in the global mainstream today?

It’s easy to answer that question if one concedes that Supreme currently makes some of the best clothes for men in America right now. And for a brand routinely overlooked by fashion publications and menswear experts as “skate clothes” or, perhaps even worse, just a fad in a niche subculture, this may come as something of a surprise.

But can you blame the press for sleeping on it? For almost two decades, Supreme has existed in a cult-like bubble. Many of their short-run products have a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it shelf-life; you’ll pretty much never, ever receive an invite to some Supreme-sponsored open-bar fête (because they almost never happen); and unless you’ve been systematically tracking its product developments on the array of feverish blogs devoted to the brand, or know a mole on the inside who can text you when a new shipment has been delivered, you’ll miss out entirely.

Starting with its swagger-filled moniker, the label certainly has built a colossal and often intimidating public aura. “The most important thing I think is the name – Supreme,” says the art photographer Ari Marcopolous, a frequent collaborator whose images have helped define the brand’s visuals, including having his work silkscreened on an assortment of sneakers for the label’s partnership with Vans. “Really, you cannot do much better than that.”

Being sovereign – the supreme ruler of culture – is the brand’s unofficial mission statement; everything is appropriated, recontextualised and refitted in Supreme’s hands to be made better. (Not the least of which is the fire-truck red box logo ripped from the oeuvre of Barbara Kruger.) Chinos are constructed with military-grade reinforcement, hats are made with a sturdy square brim, and T-shirts are twice as thick. They’ve carefully chosen to cross-pollinate their homegrown image with unhip but timelessly macho brands like Hanes and The North Face, worked with blue-chip artists such as Jeff Koons and Christopher Wool for their art-deck series, and built ad campaigns around a motley crew of celebrities that have no direct connection to skateboarding, including Kermit the Frog, Mike Tyson and the pop star Lady Gaga.

In fact, the brand’s biggest appropriation of all is the very idea of what a skate shop is – or isn’t. “I don’t see Supreme as a skate shop at all,” says Steve Rodriquez, the owner of 5boro Skateboards and one of the founding members of the New York City Skateboarding Association. “It started a whole new genre of store. To some people, it became like a religion.”

Like most religions, James Jebbia, Supreme’s founder, is fiercely protective of his shop’s doctrine, its history, and of who is allowed to retell its myths. To him, most articles in the press about his brand get it all wrong. “All the magazines, if they’re being nice, just think we’re some cool little skate shop doing kick flips downtown,” Jebbia says. “They always write the same thing over and over.”

Because of this belief system, Jebbia and his team are notoriously press shy. Although Jebbia is soft-spoken and quite generous (by the end our conversation he offered me a checkered North Face for Supreme hat that was no longer on the shelf at the store but still in stock), he is cautious and skeptical about the media and those who write for it. “If you don’t understand us, then what’s the point?” he huffs, referring chiefly to the confusion on how to treat the brand (is it an X-games label like Quicksilver and Billabong, or a legitimate small fashion label more similar to agnès B or A.P.C.) and, more troublingly, the frequent pigeonholing of skateboard culture within the fashion industry as just a passing fad, no different from big shoulders or neon colours.

There are so few examples of stories about Supreme that Jebbia finds successful, he treats the chosen pieces like scripture that he is eager to share. The holy writ includes an interview with Glenn O’Brien from Interview magazine from 2009, a 1995 article from Vogue comparing the persnickety shopping habits of the uppity uptown women who peruse the racks at Chanel’s boutique on East 57th Street and the baggy-pants, bed-head boys who wait in line for hours at a time to shop at Supreme in SoHo; and of course, the 300-page retrospective of the brand released by Rizzoli last year (of which Mr. O’Brien wrote the introduction, and in which the Vogue article was reproduced in full.)

The message is clear: Supreme is sacred, and it’s sacrilegious to get the story wrong.

“The fashion industry doesn’t understand Supreme,” says the stylist Andrew Richardson, who has helped facilitate several projects with the label, including a calendar with Larry Clark. “And that doesn’t bother James one bit. They want James out and about, paying for dinners and hosting parties. But he’s not. Fashion people want something that is uncomplicated and easy to digest – those are the opposite things James embraces. But really, at the end of the day, James doesn’t care. Why should he?”

Hearing Jebbia talk about the press, you don’t get the impression that he is paranoid about being criticised or that he is tyrannical over what is written about his beloved brand. Most articles simply do not live up to the gold standard he has set for his label and himself, or the one expected from his fastidious customer-base. The impression is that most writers and publications are not worthy.

“We always try to shoot for the very best and go for it,” he says. “Some people call that snobbery, I guess. But it’s not.”

Indeed, selectivity and exclusivity are an integral part of the brand’s DNA. When the shop opened in 1994, it immediately became an epicentre for what Aaron “A-Ron” Bondaroff, the label’s front man, has called “train-hopping, taxicab-jumping, runaway kids.” And dudes from all over the city followed in reverence, often lining up for hours to be the first to score the latest products to come in, like candy-collared baseball caps or spacious bomber jackets with the Supreme logo shown discreetly on an outside tag. And even if you made it inside, the really real cool kids knew to ask for the hidden, in-the-know merchandise in the back storage room.

Remembers Bondaroff: “The social club wasn’t so inviting, though, and had a lot of attitude. We made the rules and ran a business that was very successful. People were addicted to the clothes like a drug. We didn’t want to work so hard so we developed a sales style that worked in our favour. In the early days, it was like, come in, but don’t touch. You can look with your eyes, but not with your hands. It was a crazy way to sell garments but the customer learned the deal: don’t fuck with us and we won’t fuck with you.”

The store was so cool, it was, well, scary. “I remember being so nervous walking past it, I would walk across the street,” says Jen Brill, a freelance creative director and “friend” of the brand since it’s inception, “even though a lot of the guys that worked in there were my friends. It was effective, though, and set an impeccable aura around the shop.”

In an interview with the graffiti artist KAWS from the Supreme retrospective, Jebbia maintains that, even in his own tank, he too felt like a fish out of water: “There were 50 or 60 skaters who’d just hang out there. And right at that time, too, Larry Clark was filming Kids. For me, again, it wasn’t part of my world, but I knew it felt very rebellious. It felt right and I liked it.”

Hiding out in the back room and letting the kids rule the roost allowed Jebbia to observe the natural habits and tendencies of his clientele, not unlike the objectivity achieved from a behavioural psychologist studiously taking notes behind a two-way mirror. He didn’t have to be a skateboarder at all, he just had to know what this new generation of skate kids wanted and what they weren’t getting anywhere else.

Most importantly, Jebbia developed the cunning to anticipate what they needed next. If you’re too far in it, you can’t see outside. The distance from the lifestyle, conversely, gave Jebbia a sublime ability to understand how best to represent the lifestyle. “I think James is always thinking with a 25-year-old skateboarder somewhere in his mind with everything he does,” says Richardson.

Tree Trunks Inspiring the Decay Of City Life by Henrique Oliveira

We were intrigued by the work of Brazilian artist Henrique Oliveira, whose original installations bring disruptions to gallery walls and probably to visitors’ minds. Oliviera uses tree trunks that are splitting and dying (worn by time and weather), in order to draw attention on the unseen forces that contribute to the decay of city life. The materials are collected by the artist on the streets of São Paulo. The peels of wood are curled onto a PVC pipe skeleton and then usually painted in a vivid color palette. The overall result is that of trees bursting out of gallery walls, an impressive and dynamic sight. According to My Modern Met, the idea for these works and exhibitions generated when Henrique Oliviera noticed a gradually peeling fence outside his window, back when he was a student in São Paulo. He used the dismantled fence in order to create his first project of this kind. Find his works as startling as we do?

Here's another interesting one—the 10 brands from the Fortune 500 that had the most online video views in 2011, courtesy of Visible Measures. Two of the companies, GE and Ford, are in the top 10 of the Fortune 500 itself—the epitome of sheer size and viral marketing reach combined. Google, which is No. 92 on the Fortune 500, tops this list—largely thanks to its celebrity-studded Chrome campaign, featuring Lady Gaga among others. The player hitting the most above its weight here is Corning, which is No. 350 on the Fortune 500 but had the 10th-most online video views this year, almost all of them for its famed "A Day Made of Glass" video—a real one-hit wonder. Brotip #1202: If you can't think of a badass idea, take an old idea and do something badass with it. Here's how to build a new media empire in "Entourage" nation.
We were talking about him and we were like, dude, this is our guy: We need Mark Cuban," says Mossab O. Basir, the executive director at Brotips Media, a year-old company that writes wisdom in social media, like fortune cookies for bros. "We're Entourage's number-one fans. We've seen Turtle struggle to get Mark Cuban. Mark's a bro, right? He's totally a bro. He's good times like that. He's the perfect guy to stand behind us. Literally, I flipped him an email with our story and a quick sales pitch, and that's where it started. And we went back and forth until we reached a mutual agreement."

Cuban signed on about three weeks ago, and now sits on the Brotips board. (Though in typical Cuban fashion, nobody from Brotips has met him, or even talked by phone. It's all email.) The dudes are excited. They're planning for exbronential growth.

And Cuban's pumped, too. "I think it is riding a cultural wave that is very leverageable on multiple platforms," he says in an email to Fast Company. "The guys have really captured a huge fan base and they have significant and multiple revenue opps."

How much did he invest? "1 billion dollars and 17 cents," Cuban writes.

Seriously, bro? No. Way.

Brotip #1: There's a 99% chance that you're awesome. Act like it.

Brotips started, like so many bro adventures, because of a girl. Some guy at Emory University had failed to score in the way he'd hoped, and he took to Facebook to vent his frustrations. It got real, man. Ugly. People were talking. That's when freshman Dominique Barfield left a little message--that "99%" line--on the offending dude's wall.

Within 12 hours, 140,000 people had repeated the line on Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr. Barfield and some friends were like, whoa! They wanted to seize the bromentum, so they launched a Tumblr called Brotips, and started writing more tips--wisdom to build a better bro. They were brolific. Traffic grew. The team launched a Twitter and Facebook page, capitalizing on the brotential of what they were doing: They'd become a media company that produced little tips for big bros, content designed to be easily shared.

Bros get a bad rap, says Yousef Khraibut, one of the founders. He wants the site to take "bro" back from the Jersey Shore, to make men proud to be bros: "An ideal bro is a guy who wants to live life in a way where they're constantly positive," he says. "Instead of a bro being a male who's a douchy, alpha, misogynistic person, a bro can literally be anybody--despite race, gender, or sexual orientation--who wants to remain kick-ass throughout their life, in an extremely positive level.

Turns out, that broclivity was good for traffic. Fifty-five percent of Brotips users are female, because they like the example it sets. The site recently published Brotip #1358: "Meet me at nine," does not mean, "leave your house at nine." A lot of women retweeted that one. "They want guys to see that. So it's like, 'Oh I wish my boyfriend was more like this,'" Khraibut says.

By May, the Brotips team needed someone with business acumen to manage this growth. Khraibut thought back to Basir, who'd worked in marketing at Intelligent Mechatronic Systems when Khraibut was an intern there. "He talked to me about the site for a week," Basir says. "I kept ignoring it. But when he showed me how many visitors he had, I said, What!?"

Brotips has more than 250,000 Facebook fans (and 18 million page views), 400,000 Twitter followers, 300,000 Tumblr users, and 2.5 million visits per month to Brotips.com.

Basir signed on. Now Brotips is a team of 11. Basir is 26 years old. The rest are in college, all under age 20, spread across America, Canada, and England. And they aren't all guys. There are four lady-bros.

Brotips isn't inventing advice. It isn't creating an audience. It's just found a voice that resonates with lots of stand-up bros, and it's built a big community purely on the strength of sharable social media--so now it's time to capitalize. Yesterday, its site Brotips.com got a major overhaul: It enhanced visitors' ability to share tips, and created space for advertisers. That finally gives it a home page to match its ambitions.

The team has plans. It's signed up with International Creative Management, which is busily shopping book and TV deals. It's launching apparel--your favorite Brotip on a T-shirt, say. And next year, it'll be starting a brobassador program, which will anoint people at colleges across the country to spread the word and host Brotips parties.

With Cuban, they now have cash and cache to execute their ideas. "We've only just started with Mark," Basir says. "There's a lot of big and good things ahead, hopefully."

Cuban has already given Brotips plenty of business brotips, Basir says. But what of Basir's original hunch--Mark Cuban, ultimate bro? We put it to him: "Mark, do you consider yourself a bro?"

"You have to search the tips to find out!" he wrote.

The Five C’s of Cultural Buzz

1. Collaborations

By bringing together interesting or unlikely connections (often between stars), brands will often see an increased buzz surrounding the pairing. Musicians have long known the value of collaboration, and as Jay-Z and Kanye West proved with their platinum CD “Watch the Throne” earlier this fall, collaborations don’t just deliver on creativity, but on capital as well. But collaborating isn’t just for musicians. One needs to look no further than Ben & Jerry’s for an example of a brand that understands the value of a well-thought-out mashup. From its “Late Night Snack” ice cream featuring comic Jimmy Fallon to its more recent “Schweddy Balls,” which gave a nod to SNL’s popular Alec Baldwin parody of NPR, the brand isn’t afraid to take risks in its flavor partnerships.

2. Causes

A strong, relevant active agenda and point of view often gathers the support of people, whether it’s philanthropic or politically driven. Nike’s campaign for its Back For The Future Mags, which were auctioned on eBay, raised more than $11.3 million for the Michael J. Fox Foundation. Furthermore, personalities including Brian Wilson of the San Francisco Giants, Kanye West, and Tinie Tempah were all seen wearing the kicks.

And although not a brand, the Occupy Wall Street movement is the latest example of the power in rallying individuals around a socioeconomic cause. Even Sean Parker, the Napster founder and backer of Spotify, who is among the 1 percent of the population backers are protesting, tweets his affinity for the cause.

3. Context

Unexpected events, which dramatically interrupt our sense of context, also drive heavyweight attention and buzz. Anytime an environment, be it urban, personal, retail or otherwise is effected from what we expect it to be, it challenges our perception and draws our attention as we seek to understand the disruption.

Target knew this when it launched its highly anticipated Missoni for Target collection. The brand created Marina, a 25-foot Missoni-clad fashion blogger that not only was the face of the bloggers pretending to be her on its social properties, but which also made pop-up appearances from Times Square to a Fashion Week blogger conference.

4. Conversation

Ideas that force an opinion, divide opinions, and drive debate will receive a fair share of buzz. Often the conversational buzz is a reaction of strong opinions and expressing the sentiment of the topic--be it humor, anger, sympathy, or any other potent emotion. Likewise, conversational topics become imitated and morphed to increase the entertainment value of the reaction, which we’ve seen recently in the popularity of memes. From “Winning” with Charlie Sheen to planking to now “Tebowing,” ideas that can spark the masses to mimic and interpret an idea in their own way are growing, especially because of the ease of sharing content through social media.

5. Covert

Unclaimed, leaked, often risky ideas that push boundaries allow brands to fly stealth, if only for a while. Ideas that feel like they’re pushing the limits of what should be allowed (or at least by the person or brand featured) often spread in popularity. Working earlier this year for Diet Pepsi’s advertising agency, we shot an outtake from the brand’s new TV commercial. It shows David Beckham casually achieving seemingly impossible place kicks with a soccer ball into trash cans on Santa Monica beach. The clip, posted to YouTube, recorded more than 4 million views and spawned a slew of meme uploads from consumers, while also generating a frenzy of media interest and social media discussion over the legitimacy of the incredible shots.

Buzz Builds Brands

Certainly it can help fuel your brand’s buzz if you can afford an A-List celeb, but generally the most-buzzed-about brands have achieved their cultural capital by embracing these five behaviors and consistently finding innovative ways to generate new stories, which can translate buzz into real momentum and performance for the brand.

The Battle reflects a glimpse into the rivalry and tradition that dates back decades and defines HBCU bands, like the GSU Tiger Marching Band. Established in 1926, with 17-members, the band is now 250 marching strong with a resume that includes halftime performance at Super Bowl I and IX, a parade appearance in the nation’s bicentennial celebration in 1976 and the inauguration of President George W. Bush in 2001, a place in the NCAA Hall of Fame and several national iconic commercials.
The band trains rigorously day-in and day-out for football games and band rivalries that date back decades as part of the HBCU tradition. The five-part series takes viewers from the very first steps at training camp to the final march at the Bayou Classic , an annual gridiron clash between Grambling State and Southern, as the students strive to meet the expectations that come with their band’s namesake.
“A large majority of HBCU football fans take as much pride in the marching band halftime performance as the other four quarters of play that surround it,” said ESPNU vice president Rosalyn Durant. “As the home for college sports we take pride in providing the content that our sports fans crave and ‘The Battle’ is a continuation of that commitment.”

As smart phones get smarter, so too do the quotidian gadgets we use on daily basis. The latest example, a Bluetooth 4.0-equipped Casio G-Shock watch. Fans of the G-Shock line will be pleased to note that the wireless technology has been applied to the existing 6900 model instead of a new, high-tech looking device. As for features, the watch will be able to automatically sync the time with one’s smart phone, which is typically auto-set by the carrier network. (This should come in handy while traveling.) Additionally, the timepiece will emit alarm or vibration signals as notification of incoming phone messages or emails, which can then be turned off with a simple tap. The latest stories from the bleeding edge of education thinking.
A few highlights from the recent issues of EdSurge, the edtech entrepreneur's weekly roadmap.
MAPPING THE WORLD Every pioneer needs a map and now the NewSchools Venture Fund has started to make one of the edtech world.  With support from the Laura and John Arnold Foundation, and contributions from edsurgent dudes Michael B. Horn and Anthony Kim, NSVF's Ted Mitchell and Kristina Ransick have pulled together a marvelous connect-the-dots portrait of the industry, cataloguing companies into four high level groups (such as curricula and instructional systems) and then into more specific areas (under curricula: tutoring, test prep, digital textbooks, etc). The project aims to give entrepreneurs and funders (nonprofit and for profit) a clearer view of the industry. The market map OF 230 companies was unveiled at a meeting of philanthropists in San Francisco. Click here to start your voyage through the edtech marketplace.   The challenge, of course, is keeping it current. Other catalogues of the edtech world, such as StartL's Dealbook, have languished. No word yet on how this one will be maintained.   

NOT TO BE FLIPPANT: We're fascinated by the rumbling debate on the "flipped classroom" model, where students watch lectures at home and do teacher-guided homework in school. Fans are exuberant. Skeptics raise the "digital divide" issue: we can't take for granted that everyone has the hardware and networking gear to stream videos. (That's led by Microsoft, Comcast, Best Buy, and others working with the FCC's Connect to Compete initiative to try to bridge the gap.) Then there are the critics: Education blogger Frank Noschese worries about the excessive marketing hype around Khan and warns against the rebirth of the "filmstrip teacher." Liz Dwyer from GOOD asks whether a video is more active or engaging than reading a textbook. Who's to say that students are paying attention--or just chattering away on Facebook? (This latest study from Rey Junco suggests this is where they spend on average 106 minutes a day.) Even earning "badges" for working through problem sets is tricky, as students using Khan Academy in Los Altos schools are learning.

What gets lost in this whole "flipping" debate (forgive the pun) is the fact that it's a tool. And just like you can't use a mallet as a screwdriver, one tool won't educate every student. (Personalization people!) Illinois teacher Brian Bennett emphatically reminds us "the flipped class is not about the videos".

EdSurge agrees: we'd like to hear more about how teachers are deploying video as part of a multi-faceted teaching strategy--even if they learn a few lessons along the way because it doesn't work as planned--rather than treating video lectures or the flipped classroom as the cure-all for our education woes.
BLENDED, NOT STIRRED So called "blended learning" continues to be the biggest buzzword in this industry. The term embraces many instances where schools fuse technology and traditional teaching. Exactly what does that mean? Industry consultants, Ed Elements, offer up this spiffy, eye-candy video explanation of the different flavors of "blended learning" that it has seen. These guys should know: they're the architects behind a number of pilot blended learning programs throughout the U.S.

THE GRADES ARE IN: Last week's 2011 Excellence in Action National Summit on Education Reform also rolled out the Nation's Digital Learning Report Card, grading states' digital learning programs on 10 criteria. The yet-to-be-released bill tracker feature looks promising for policy wonks.

UNPREPARED FOR CLASS: Clever advertising from edtech company, Knewton: an infographic about how unprepared many American students are for college (see below). Knewton knows a bit about prepping: the Manhattan-based privately-held edtech firm, which employs 70 people, makes test preparation programs that it reports are used by thousands of students at colleges and universities including Arizona State University, Penn State University, University of Nevada (Las Vegas), Mount St. Mary's and Washington State University.

It's prepping itself for a bigger role in education, too. Last week, Knewton announced it had raised a $33 million series D financing round from investors including Founders Fund, education publisher Pearson, as and previous investors, Accel, Bessemer and FirstMark.

Knewton got its start in the lucrative test-prep business and has been building an "adaptive" engine that presents learners with different types of problems depending on how they're doing. So far, it's operated in the post secondary space. But Knewton plans to use its newfound equity cash--along with the partnership with Pearson and, on the horizon, other significant publishers--to get into K-12. Schools hunting for "adaptive" language arts programs will likely welcome the move. Jose Ferreira, Knewton's blunt-speaking founder and CEO, tells EdSurge that Knewton will likely launch its K-12 programs in 2012. "You can only be competitive if you convince publishers to adopt you as a standard," Ferreira says.
